Located some 13 km from Sebes and set up, rather atypically, in a low point rather than a high one, Calnic Fortress is a XIII century citadel that was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites
It comprises two roughly oval walls, a fort, and two towers. The outer yard, with a maximum diameter of 70 m, appears surprisingly short, as its 3 m high walls are dwarfed by the 7 m high walls of the inner yard. This inner yard, measuring 50 m in diameter at its longest, is the heart of the citadel, hosting the chapel, the larders – still functional – and the keep, the tower used as lodgings, which today serves as a museum for folk and medieval arts and crafts.
